The classification of agricultural and forestry holdings in terms of their key production activities and economic size are an important basis for agricultural policy and extension services. They are an important tool in applied statistics for the stratification of samples in order to achieve homogeneous units.

In the past, there were different systems for classification of holdings in Austria. With the Farm Structure Survey 2010 and the Green Report 2013, the classification system previously based on standard gross margins was changed to the current classification system based on standard output. Simultaneously with the launch of the current classification system, the selection frame, i.e. the mass delimitation of the population for the sample accounting farms, was redefined.

In this publication, the current classification system based on standard output will be presented. The calculation method for standard output coefficients is described for each category. Moreover, the stepwise determination of the farm type is described in theory and illustrated by means of a synthetic farm.

The change of both the classification system and the adaptation of the selection frame change the statistical weight of the single accounting farm in the extrapolation of all evaluation groups (because of re-assignments of farm type and economic size).

For this reason, the results of the extrapolations classified based on the standard output and the results of extrapolations classified on the basis of the standard gross margins are not comparable for any evaluation group.
