Risikomanagement in der Landwirtschaft. Schriftenreihe der Bundesanstalt für Agrarwirtschaft Nr. 102

Hambrusch, J.; Tribl, Ch.

Due to recent developments on agricultural markets, risk management has gained importance for agricultural holdings. Risk management is reflected in the legislative proposals of the European Commission on the future design of the Common Agricultural Policy and considers both proven instruments (e.g., subsidies on insurance premiums) and new instruments for income compensation. This report represents a synopsis of three studies on "risk management in agriculture". The first study analyses the reasons for changes in income of Austrian agricultural holdings. The second study applies two alternative income compensation models to the Austrian situation and quantifies the share of farms with income losses for several years and the corresponding financial amount necessary for the compensation of these losses. Finally, the third study assesses commodity futures exchanges and mutual funds regarding their suitability as a risk management instrument for Austrian agriculture.
